Samuel Van Wyck came to the Province of Ontario about 1797 with a wife and two children. His father had been a Captain in the Long Island Militia before the Revolution. He located in York and owned and sailed a ship on Lake Ontario. The vessel was lost after which he came to Stamford and settled near what is now the corner of Victoria Ave and Morrison St. Niagara Falls. Their place was plundered in the War of 1812 and the family fled towards the Short Hills for safety during the Lundy's Lane Campaign. |
